Yuh-Jung Youn, 73, has made Oscars history as the first Korean performer to win an Academy Award in one of the four acting categories.
She told a reporter on the red carpet that she hadn't prepared a speech because she was certain Glenn Close would win.
"I cannot believe I'm here," Youn said in her improvised acceptance speech. "I'm luckier than you," she joked to Close, who has never won an Oscar despite eight nominations.
"Minari" is a film about a family of South Korean immigrants who moved to Northwest Arkansas and started a farm. It's based on the story of Lee Isaac Chung, the director, who grew up in Lincoln, Arkansas.
The film also picked up nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Steven Yeun, Best Original Score, and Best Original Screenplay.
Youn has been a sensation on Korean screens for decades, most often playing witty, thought-provoking characters.
