The discovery was made by two Sabah Parks coast guards conducting routine monitoring and cleanup activities in the snorkeling area along the island's beach, according to The Borneo Post.

After alerting authorities, Sabah Parks announced the temporary closure of the Sibuan Island substation on its official Facebook page. The closure, which began at 12:30 PM on 7 January, was implemented to ensure public safety while the object was investigated.

"We deeply regret any inconvenience caused by this matter," the statement read.

The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) later confirmed that the object was indeed an old bomb, classified as unexploded ordnance (UXO) from World War II.

The UXO measured approximately 0.91 meters in length and 0.34 meters in diameter, weighing an estimated 250 kilograms. Based on investigations, it was identified as an aerial bomb, a type of bomb dropped from aircraft, likely dating back to 1945.

A team of mine divers from RMN's Lumut Fire Pit Diving and Warfare Headquarters (MSPPA), in collaboration with the Sandakan Maritime Area Headquarters 2 (MAWILLA 2), was dispatched to handle the bomb's disposal.

On 11 January, the bomb was successfully detonated at the site of discovery using the "Blow In Place" (BIP) method. The operation, carried out at 3:10 PM, adhered to stringent safety protocols to ensure minimal impact. The Royal Malaysian Navy confirmed that the detonation caused no harm to property or the marine environment.

"Based on the Post Blast Investigation (PBI), RMN Mine Divers confirmed that the UXO was an 'Aerial Bomb,'" the navy's statement said.

The successful disposal of the bomb marks the resolution of a potentially dangerous situation in the region, allowing Sibuan Island to reopen for visitors and ensuring the safety of the marine park.

This incident highlights the ongoing presence of remnants from World War II and the diligent efforts of authorities to manage such discoveries safely.
