Whoopi Goldberg has made a spectacular return to the stage, stepping into the iconic role of Miss Hannigan in the national tour of Annie at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The 69-year-old EGOT winner, who had been away from the stage for several years, quickly silenced any doubts about her performance. Her debut on December 11, was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation, as the audience showed their appreciation for her incredible performance.

Goldberg, known for her comedic brilliance, delivered a masterclass in the art of timing and character portrayal. As Miss Hannigan, the orphanage matron, she embraced the role’s humor while adding her unique flair. Armed with a bottle of booze and a whistle, Goldberg’s interpretation of the character is both menacing and comedic, drawing laughs through her perfect delivery of sarcastic remarks and sudden mood swings.

The character of Miss Hannigan was originally brought to life by Dorothy Loudon in 1977, with many actresses—including Carol Burnett, Katie Finneran, and Taraji P. Henson—taking on the role since. However, Goldberg elevated the character, finding new moments that stole the spotlight. Her performance of the famous number "Little Girls" was flawless, while her collaboration with Rhett Guter (Rooster) and Isabella De Souza Moore (Lily St. Regis) in "Easy Street" was packed with both sharp choreography and dark humor.

Goldberg’s View co-hosts, Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar, were full of praise for her performance. Hostin applauded Goldberg's innate talent, saying, "There’s a reason why she’s an EGOT." Behar echoed her sentiments, remarking on Goldberg’s versatility as she sings, dances, and even showcases her legs during the performance.

This return to the New York stage is significant for Goldberg. Not only does it mark her first major role on a Broadway stage since 2008's Xanadu, but it’s also the first time she’s played a villain. Goldberg has expressed her long-standing desire to take on darker roles, and Miss Hannigan has allowed her to fully embrace this side of her craft. “I’m an actor first,” she shared, indicating her deep connection to her theatrical roots.

Annie, which has remained a beloved musical since its debut, follows the story of young orphan Annie as she is chosen to spend the holidays with the wealthy Daddy Warbucks. The show features a score of classic songs such as “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Maybe,” and “Tomorrow.” This production is directed by Jenn Thompson, with Hazel Vogel starring as Annie and Christopher Swan playing Daddy Warbucks.
