Whoopi Goldberg is keeping the faith when it comes to Sister Act 3.
While attending the 2025 Oscars, the EGOT winner gave fans a long-awaited update on the highly anticipated sequel, revealing where production stands following the passing of her beloved co-star Maggie Smith.

“I had hoped to get it done before Maggie passed, and we weren’t able to do that,” Whoopi shared with Zuri Hall during Live From E!: The Oscars. “But they have the script now, so fingers are crossed.”
Whoopi and Maggie starred together in the 1992 classic Sister Act, with Whoopi playing lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier, who goes into hiding in a convent and transforms a struggling choir under the watchful eye of Maggie’s character, Mother Superior. The duo reprised their roles in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in 1993.

Whoopi first announced Sister Act 3 was in development back in 2020. However, following the Downton Abbey star’s passing in September 2024 at the age of 89, the project has undergone some adjustments.
“We’re having to make some readjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith,” Whoopi told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in November. “We will get it done. They’ll get it done. It just is a shift.”

Though she attended the 97th Academy Awards as a presenter this year, Whoopi is no stranger to Oscar glory. She won Best Supporting Actress in 1991 for her role in Ghost and later hosted the ceremony four times.
Reflecting on her favorite Oscars moment, she reminisced about Billy Crystal’s unforgettable Silence of the Lambs-inspired entrance. “My favorite memory is Billy Crystal being wheeled out as Hannibal Lecter,” she said, dazzling in a Christian Siriano gown. “I’m sorry, for me, that’s the epitome.”
