Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 1985 classic The Goonies is in development. The project is gaining momentum with an impressive creative team, including legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who conceived the story for the original film and served as executive producer.

Screenwriter Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry, Still the King) is penning the script, while Chris Columbus, the writer of the first film and director of Home Alone and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, is on board as a producer. Spielberg is also producing alongside his Amblin Entertainment colleagues Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario.
Lauren Shuler Donner, known for producing the X-Men franchise and the longtime collaborator of late Goonies director Richard Donner, is also attached as an executive producer. However, a director for the sequel has yet to be announced.
Since its release, The Goonies has remained a fan favorite, following a group of adventurous kids from Oregon as they race to uncover hidden pirate treasure while outsmarting the villainous Fratelli family. For decades, fans have speculated about a sequel, and while rumors have surfaced in the past, this is the first time a follow-up has officially entered development.

The original film starred Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green, many of whom have reunited over the years to celebrate the film’s legacy.
