second drive-thru covid-19 vaccine centre kicks off at usm, penang

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang has begun their second drive-through Covid-19 vaccination centre (PPV).

The drive-through PPV started work at 9am yesterday (23rd July) to vaccinate second dose recipients.

Prof Md Roslan Hashim, main committee chairman of PPV@USM, said they will start with only 100 vaccine recipients today at the drive-through PPV.

He mentioned that the full capacity for the drive-through PPV is 200 and will eventually increase to 200 recipients per day.

Once it reaches the maximum 200, those who arrive after will be directed to the static PPV instead with a capacity of 800 vaccinations daily.

“The maximum capacity for both PPVs is 1,000.” He added.

Recipients will need to follow a few conditions at the drive-through PPV. One of the conditions notes that recipients must be accompanied by one driver and there will be a 15-minute observation after the vaccination.

The professor added that they will not allow those who are alone in the vehicle and those on motorcycles to receive their Covid-19 shots.

PPV USM has about 200 volunteers that consist of both USM staff and students.

One of the drive-through vaccination recipients, Siti Zahara Md Haniff, 59, said that the drive-through vaccination is convenient for those with physical disabilities.

Another recipient, Cheong Fook Choon, 66, said it is safer to stay in the car so there was less contact with others at the PPV.

The operating hours for the static PPV at USM is from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays, and 8.30am to 1pm on Saturdays.

However, the drive-through PPV at USM is open from 9am to 1pm or until it reaches a maximum of 200 recipients.

Both PPVs are closed on Sundays.
