Could Queen be on the verge of releasing their first new song in 30 years? Guitarist Brian May recently revealed that new material is a real possibility.

May told MOJO that he and drummer Roger Taylor are always writing and experimenting in their studios. “I think it could happen,” he said. “I could have the beginnings of a Queen song right in front of me now. It’s just whether the idea reaches maturity or not.”

Queen’s last studio album, Made in Heaven, came out in 1995 following Freddie Mercury’s death. In 2022, they released Face It Alone, a previously unheard track featuring Mercury’s vocals, but they haven’t shared any new compositions since. Last year, Taylor also hinted that new music might be on the way, saying, “If we feel we have good material, why not? We can still play. We can still sing.”

Since 2011, Queen has performed with Adam Lambert as their frontman, following a brief period with Paul Rodgers. While Lambert has “dabbled” in the studio with the band, he admits the idea of new Queen music carries weight. “If they’re going to release something new, it has to be at a certain level. It’s a lot of pressure,” he said. “I’ve always wondered, ‘Is it appropriate for me to do new material?’ It scares me.”

In the interview, May also reflected on his nerves when presenting songs to the band. “Every time I brought a song to the boys, I’d be as nervous as hell, thinking they’d hate it,” he admitted.

He also reminisced about working with Mercury, describing him as both shy and wildly creative. “Freddie’s ideas were off the wall and cheeky. Sometimes they were brilliant, sometimes not—but we always encouraged him.”

With May and Taylor open to new music, fans may soon hear fresh material from one of rock’s most legendary bands.
