Malaysia has been recognized as one of the top 10 retirement destinations in the world, securing the 7th spot in International Living’s Annual Global Retirement Index for 2025.

The Ireland-based publication evaluates 20 countries each year, ranking them based on key factors such as cost of living, healthcare quality, visa and residency options, climate, governance, and overall lifestyle.
Malaysia, alongside Thailand—which ranked 10th—was one of only two Southeast Asian nations to make the prestigious list.
According to the report, Malaysia continues to attract foreign retirees with its affordability, modern infrastructure, and rich multicultural charm.
"Malaysia offers a unique mix of low living costs, high-quality healthcare, and a vibrant cultural scene, making it an accessible and fulfilling retirement destination," the report states.

The study highlights Kuala Lumpur’s significantly lower rental prices compared to major Western cities, while also noting the affordability of dining out. Meanwhile, states like Penang and Melaka are praised for offering a more relaxed lifestyle at an even lower cost, making them particularly appealing for retirees.
Malaysia’s tropical climate, modern amenities, and widespread English proficiency further contribute to a smooth transition for expatriates. The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme is also recognized as a key factor in making long-term stays more accessible for foreign retirees.
The top six countries on this year’s list include Panama, Portugal, Costa Rica, Mexico, France, and Spain, while Greece and Italy also joined Malaysia in rounding out the top 10.
