Madonna and Elton John have finally put their long-running feud to rest after over 20 years of public disagreements. The two pop icons made peace during a heartfelt backstage encounter at Saturday Night Live this past weekend.
Madonna shared the emotional moment in an Instagram post on Monday, writing, “Finally buried the hatchet!!!” alongside a photo of the two embracing. She revealed that, despite being hurt by Elton John’s past criticisms of her, she decided to confront him backstage at SNL.
"I went to see Elton perform, and WOW. I was inspired by his career,” Madonna wrote. “Over the years, it hurt me to know someone I admired so much publicly disliked me as an artist. I didn’t understand it." But when they met backstage, John’s first words were, “Forgive me,” which immediately broke down the tension between them.
Madonna also reflected on how John’s music had a lasting impact on her during her youth. “I remember sneaking out to see him perform in Detroit when I was in high school. That performance changed my life," she said. "Seeing him perform helped me realize it’s okay to be different."
Their encounter at SNL quickly turned into a warm reunion. “Within minutes, we were hugging,” Madonna recalled. “Then Elton told me he’d written a song for me and wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!”
The two had a complicated relationship that dates back to the mid-90s. While their friendship started on a positive note, things soured in 2002 when John publicly criticized Madonna’s song "Die Another Day." His jabs continued for years, calling her a “miserable cow” and making fun of her performances.
But now, with their recent backstage reconciliation, it seems the duo has turned the page on their rivalry, marking a new chapter in their long and legendary careers. John also acknowledged the moment in his own Instagram story, calling it a “healing moment” with Madonna.
The pop world is certainly buzzing about the end of this decades-long tension between two of its biggest stars.
