From wild food challenges to extreme endurance tests, the internet loves an unusual competition. But this time, Malaysia is taking the spotlight with something truly unexpected—a crying contest in Kelantan.

As part of The Expo Kelantan Event, the competition quickly grabbed attention on social media, with curious onlookers wondering if they were witnessing a heartfelt display of emotions or the most dramatic acting showdown in history.

This is the first time Malaysia has hosted such an event, resembling similar contests in Indonesia, where participants battle it out to shed the most convincing tears.

Videos from the event show contestants—both men and women—going all out to impress the judges. Some pulled off exaggerated expressions, while others seemed to tap into real emotions, bringing actual tears to their eyes.

The grand prize? RM500 cash for the most convincing display of sorrow.

Spectators gathered around, some cheering, some laughing, and many recording the moment for social media. It felt like a mix of a reality show and an intense theater audition—except the stakes were cold, hard cash.

As expected, the internet had thoughts. Some found it absolutely hilarious and lighthearted, while others questioned if RM500 was really worth publicly breaking down in front of an audience.

Either way, Kelantan’s crying contest has certainly made waves. And who knows? Maybe next year, we’ll see a laughing competition instead.
