Scientists in southwestern China have discovered the fossilized remains of what they believe to be a giant prehistoric otter.

The fossils are believed to have belonged to an otter that weighed more than 50kg and was about the size of a wolf.
Scientists estimate that this giant otter’s bite force would have been about six times stronger than that of an ordinary otter. This is because, unlike its living cousin that feeds mostly on fish, this otter likely ate small birds and rodents too, and used its jaws to break bones and crack open shells.

Thank goodness it’s gone extinct!
