In an emotional interview on Today, the 79-year-old country legend opened up about the pain of adjusting to life without her partner of over 60 years, who died on March 3 at age 82. “I get very emotional when people bring it up,” she shared. “We were together 60 years. I've loved him since I was 18 years old. It is a big adjustment, just trying to change patterns and habits.”

Despite her grief, Dolly says staying busy has helped her cope. She has kept moving forward, appearing at events like the launch of Dollywood’s 40th season and the debut of Threads: My Songs in Symphony. Still, the absence of her husband weighs heavily. “I just got in the van and boohooed for the longest time,” she admitted after one emotional appearance, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support.
Dolly also expressed heartfelt gratitude to fans for their condolences, writing, “Thank you for all the messages, cards, and flowers… He is in God's arms now and I am okay with that. I will always love you.”
To honor Carl, Dolly dedicated her recent song “If You Hadn’t Been There” to him. Reflecting on their lifelong bond, she wrote, “He will always be the star of my life story.” In the song’s lyrics, she lovingly remembers Carl as her rock and greatest support: “I wouldn’t be here / If you hadn’t been there / Holding my hand / Showing you care.”
