In a recent episode of Ted Danson’s podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, the legendary actor reflected on his physical health and longevity. “I’m almost 100. This is insane,” he joked.

When asked about the key to his well-being, Van Dyke attributed it to his consistent exercise routine. “I’ve always exercised three days a week,” he said. “We still go to the gym, and I think that’s why I’m not ‘stove up’ like my peers.”

Danson, who once worked out at the same gym as Van Dyke, recalled being impressed by the actor’s fitness level. He shared how Van Dyke would move from one machine to the next—not walking, but dancing. "You literally danced to the next machine," Danson said, admiring the 99-year-old’s energy and movement.

Van Dyke, known for his upbeat attitude, replied, “Exactly. Good routine.” He also mentioned that he incorporates stretching, sit-ups, and yoga into his daily regimen.

In a 2015 NPR interview promoting his book Keep Moving and Other Tips and Truths About Aging, Van Dyke shared his thoughts on growing older. He admitted that the hardest part of aging is “giving up the things that you enjoy doing,” referencing how he no longer plays tennis, though he still enjoys running, dancing, and singing.

Van Dyke also emphasized the importance of finding joy in life, despite age-related changes. Reflecting on conversations with other older individuals, he said, “The point is to enjoy. You have to pick what you enjoy doing, what fulfills you.” He cited famous writer Henry David Thoreau’s belief that many people live lives of “quiet desperation,” but encouraged others to seek out hobbies or activities that bring them fulfillment, even in later years.

Van Dyke’s positive outlook and commitment to staying active serve as an inspiring reminder of the importance of maintaining both physical health and a joyful mindset throughout life.
