An unnamed gunman shot and killed a man and seriously wounded a woman outside a Paris hospital on yesterday (12th April) before escaping on a scooter.
Authorities say the gunman fired multiple shots at the Red Cross-run Henry Dunant private geriatric hospital.
A source close to the investigation said the dead man was born in 1987 and was "well-known for homicide, dealing narcotics, and criminal association."
After the early afternoon shooting, the two victims were rushed to the hospital, but the man died as a result of his injuries.
"I heard six loud shots while I was having lunch around 1:30 pm (1130 GMT)," said the caretaker of a nearby building. "I went out immediately, and I saw a young black man on the ground, face down, outside the hospital."
The woman who was wounded serves as a security guard at the hospital, which also acts as a COVID-19 vaccine centre. Prosecutors said she was in critical condition and that her prognosis was unknown.
Police cordoned off the area around the facility, and forensic investigators were searching the scene for evidence.
"The hospital is now functioning with reduced staff. There are a lot of people in shock," a Red Cross staffer told AFP.
