The bedroom is our favourite place to be! It’s where we rest and get some me-time after a hectic day. It’s surprising, then, that we don’t take its cleanliness seriously.

According to a research by Nippon Paint Malaysia, only 51% of Malaysians vacuum their bedroom floor once a week or less!

Leaving your bedroom dirty and dusty can cause several illnesses, and one of those reasons is because of air pollution. Yes—it’s not just an outdoor thing! Air pollution happens indoors too! In fact, the same study says that more than 60% of Malaysians suffer from poor indoor air quality.

6 bad moves you’re making in the bedroom that are secretly making you sick

What exactly are you doing wrong with your bedroom? Keep reading to find out:

#1 Not cleaning your storage units, sofas and mattresses every week

Think of all those germs/bacteria and dust gathering on them… they’ll escape into the air and are small enough for you to inhale!

#2 Not having plants

Keeping indoor plants is very popular now and not just because they make your bedroom look prettier. These plants can increase oxygen levels! Some you can consider putting in your room are snake plants, bamboo plants and golden pothos.

#3 Keeping the windows closed

When you wake up in the morning, make your bed and open the windows! When you keep them shut throughout the day, you’re only killing air ventilation.

#4 Not investing in a good air purifier

Invest in a good air purifier that’ll improve air quality so that you get sick less—and you won’t have to go to the doctor’s/pharmacy and pay for your medicine as frequently.

#5 Frequently using scented candles and potpourri

We love scented candles and potpourri, so this breaks our hearts too. But some of them do contain harmful chemicals that we end up inhaling.

#6 Using paint that’s high in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

VOCs are released from furnishings and building materials—this includes the paint on your walls! They are colourless and strong-smelling. Your respiratory system is at risk when you breathe them in.

But not all paints carry VOCs! Here are some you can consider using if you’re giving your bedroom a makeover:

Nippon Paint Green Choice Series

Besides being environmentally friendly, the Green Choice Series has a near-zero VOC content, provides tough resistance against moulds, and protects walls from bacteria.

Nippon Paint Child Wellness Range

VOCs are harmful to everyone, but especially to kids. To protect them from harmful elements, the Child Wellness Range can absorb harmful formaldehyde, stop viruses from spreading on the walls, and has anti-stain technology that makes cleaning easier.
