As most durian aficionados know, there are few things better than a fresh Musang King durian during durian season.

The Musang King is so popular, in fact, that it can be up to 40% more expensive than other types of durian. This has led some unscrupulous sellers to sell other, cheaper varieties of durian at that price, claiming that they are Musang King durians.
So, in order to avoid being cheated, here are the 5 things you should look out for in a Musang King, according to Mohd Auzaie Komarudin, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Division of the Department of Agriculture.
#1 Shape

The fruit is ovoid in shape, similar to a rugby ball or egg. It is not as round as other varieties.
#2 Colour

The Musang King is green, like other varieties, but the bottom has a distinctive star-like pattern with lines running the length of the fruit, dividing it into clear segments.
#3 Thorns

The thorns of the Musang King are shaped like small pyramids, and the area around the base of the stem has no thorns.
#4 Flesh

The flesh of the durian is thick, soft, and deep yellow in colour, with small seeds.. In Chinese, the fruit is known as Mao Shan Wang, or ‘Mountain Cat King’, because the arrangement of the flesh is said to resemble a sleeping cat.
#5 Flavour

One of the easiest ways to identify a Musang King is, of course, by tasting it. It is said to have a rich, creamy flavour with a hint of bitterness.
In the future, the government hopes to introduce QR codes to identify durians as Musang King. Until then, these are the things you should keep an eye out for before spending money on a Musang King.
