It’s that time of the Chinese New Year celebration once again everyone, that time when we realise that we’ve overstocked on oranges and there’s no one else willing to take them off our hands.

Obviously, we’re not going to just toss them into the bin, that’d be wasting food, and wasting food is a horrible habit to have. So, what to do with all the oranges we’re never going to eat? Well, here are five suggestions…

Mandarin oranges are delicious, but after having so many of them during Chinese New Year, nobody can blame us when we say we’re sick of them. Unless, of course, they are used an ingredient to make a super delicious chicken dish! Get the recipe here.

Once you’ve used the flesh to prepare your mandarin orange chicken, rather than throwing away the peel, pop them into your airtight jar of brown sugar. Orange peels store moisture that will be released over time, keeping your brown sugar fresh and soft.

#4 Turn them into detergent

On a tight budget after all that CNY spending? Save on dishwashing detergent by making your own. All you have to do is soak the mandarin oranges in vinegar for about two weeks, and they’ll be ready for use! This DIY concoction not only cleans but removes odours as well.

#5 Plant them

If you happen to have to a lot of garden space and even more patience, then why not attempt to grow your very own orange tree from the seeds which you were going to throw away anyway?

So, there you go, now you no longer have to stress over what to do with all the mandarin oranges you couldn’t finish. If none of the five suggestions above sound like a good idea to you, you can always go to work super early one day and just leave them on your colleagues’ tables anonymously.
