Scroll through your Instagram and Facebook feed—you’ll see how fatherhood is portrayed as easy and picture perfect. However, the truth tells a different story. Fatherhood comes with its own struggles. For a real-life look at this issue, we approached fathers who shared with us the lows they’ve faced.

#1 “I am unable to stay up late and play with my son.”

Children, especially toddlers, have irregular sleeping hours. One father told us how his son would wake him up at 3am, expecting him to play games with him. Unfortunately, he has to get ready for work in few hours, he’s unable to attend to him. By the time he’s fully awake and ready for work, he would still be sleeping.

#2 “I wasn’t as present as I wanted to be after the birth of my son.”

A father we talked to only spent two days with his family after his son’s birth as he was unable to take extra days off. Knowing that his wife needed him to be around to help and comfort her has caused him to feel guilty, and he wished he had been there to make things easier.

#3 “I wish I could control my emotions better when I’m with my family.”

Stress happens to everyone—especially working parents. A father admitted that because he gets tired after work, he tends to be impatient with his kids especially when they’re mischievous. Sometimes he would raise his voice—which he wants to do less as he knows they’re just being children.

#4 “I don’t have enough energy to help my kids with their lessons.”

School is getting more and more competitive. Making sure that their kids are educated is important for every parent. A father expressed that he wants to have more energy helping his kids with their homework. But it gets a bit hard when he also needs the time to read through what they’re learning at school so that he understands it too!

#5 “I get backaches from carrying my son for too long.”

Juggling fatherhood and a career isn’t easy. A father explained how often he gets a backache after carrying his son for an extended period of time, and how he’s unable to lift heavy furniture, like his child’s crib.
