Headaches are a pain—literally—especially if you have what seems like hundreds of tasks to complete. Here’s an interesting bit though… you could be the cause of those headaches!

Here are some daily things that could trigger headaches, and advice on how to deal with them:

#1 Eating a lot of processed meats

Consuming processed meat may seem harmless, but there’s definitely a link to headaches. Nitrates, a kind of preservative added to meats to prevent bacteria growth, is the main cause of it. We just have to consume less processed meats.

#2 Change in or lack of sleep

Abnormal sleeping patterns or lack of sleep is sure to cause headaches. The likeliness of getting a headache comes from getting bad sleep. Lack of sleep lowers pain threshold as well. It’s not easy to get more or better sleep, but prioritise it if possible.

#3 Skipping meals

Work may get in the way of lunch or dinner. If skipping meals is a habit, headaches will definitely come. Hunger and dehydration can lead to headaches. Try getting meals on time and, if you’re still busy, practise packing snacks so that at least you have something to nibble on without having to leave your workspace.

#4 Bad posture

Slumping strains the muscles on the back of the neck that interact with the spine. Muscles spasms may occur at the neck, irritating the nerves at the back of the head and that can trigger headaches. Standing and sitting straight may help to relieve pain and therefore reduce headaches.

#5 Stress

It’s obvious that stress causes a lot of things besides headaches. From anxiety to eating disorders, stress is usually the core for most illnesses, health-wise and mental-wise. Try different ways to de-stress such as breathing practices or calming activities.

These may be common habits that cause headaches, but everyone has different triggers for headaches. It’s much easier to find out what triggers your headache and avoid these triggers accordingly.
