US basketball star reportedly the highest paid athlete at Rio Olympics
Aug 04, 2016
US basketball star Kevin Durant is reportedly the highest paid athlete at the Rio Olympics with just over 56 million dollars earned in the past 12 months, from June 2015 to June this year.
Forbes ranked Serbia's tennis world number one Novak Djokovic as the second highest paid athlete, with 55.8 million dollars from prize money, endorsements and appearance fees.
Brazilian football icon Neymar and Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal were tied for 3rd place with 37.5 million earned respectively during the past year.
Meanwhile, ticket sales for the Rio Olympics have been poor with just 2 days to the start of the Games.
Some 1.2 million tickets, around 20% of the total, are reportedly still available including for popular events such as Usain Bolt's likely bid for glory in the 100-meters final.
That is a stark contrast with the London Games in 2012, when tickets for the most popular events were sold out several months in advance.
