Lewandowski wins top FIFA prize

Dec 18, 2020

Robert Lewandowski has been named the FIFA Best Men’s Player Of the Year.

The Bayern Munich striker beat Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the honour.

Lewandowski finished as the top scorer in the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League tournaments last season…as he guided the German giants to the treble.

Meanwhile, Bayern’s Manuel Neuer was named best goalkeeper, beating Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Liverpool’s Alisson.

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp was named coach of the year for guiding the Reds to their first league title in 30 years.

While Son Heung Min’s solo goal for Tottenham against Burnley last year was awarded the Puskas award for goal of the year.

Clubs vote down five-subs proposal

Premier League clubs have voted against allowing teams to make five substitutions per match.

This, despite several top managers like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola saying that limiting them to just three substitutes per game puts players in danger of being overworked.

The Premiership is currently the only major league in Europe not to have the five-substitute limit – which was introduced when football resumed after the Covid-19 suspension.

Top-flight English clubs, however, have agreed in principle to introduce two additional substitutions for a team to replace players who’ve suffered a concussion.

Devils on a roll

Marcus Rashford scored twice, as Man United held on for a 3-2 Premiership win over Sheffield United this morning.

The result moves the Red Devils up to sixth in the table and extends their unbeaten run in the league to six matches.

Sheffield, meanwhile, remain rooted at the bottom of the table with just one point from 13 matches.

It is officially the worst start to a season in the history of English top-flight football.
