Everton frustrate Liverpool in Merseyside Derby

Jun 22, 2020

Everton and Liverpool had to settle for a point after their Premiership clash at Goodison Park this morning ended goalless.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp says the draw is what they've come to expect from a tightly-contested Merseyside derby.

"We saw all our last few derbies here were never any better. Each team is fighting like crazy but in the end its not a lot of football. Its like this...both teams understand the idea of the derby"

The result means leaders Liverpool now need five more points to secure their first top-flight title in 30 years.

The Reds can also clinch the title when they take on Crystal Palace on Thursday...if second-placed Man City fail to beat Burnley tomorrow morning.

Over at Villa Park, Chelsea came from behind to pull off a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

The home side took the lead just before half-time, only for Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud to respond for the Blues in quick succession in the second half.

Another match saw Newcastle take a massive step towards Premiership survival, with a 3-0 win over Sheffield United.

Over in Spain...

Real Madrid went top of La Liga after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Real Sociedad.

Zinedine Zidane's side are level on points with second-placed Barcelona, but go top because of their superior head-to-head record.

Dimitrov tests positive

Grigor Dimitrov has tested positive for Covid-19...the highest-profile tennis player so far to be infected with the coronavirus.

Officials say none of those who came into close contact with Dimitrov at a recent tournament, including world number one Novak Djokovic, have displayed any coronavirus symptoms so far.
