North Macedonia stun Italy in World Cup playoff

North Macedonia have pulled off a massive upset, beating four-time champions Italy 1-0 in the World Cup playoff semifinal this morning.

Aleksandar Trajkovski netted the winner in the second minute of injury-time.

The result means the European Champions will now miss the World Cup for the second successive tournament.

Elsewhere, Portugal booked their place in the World Cup playoff final after a 3-1 win over Turkey.

Gareth Bale scored twice as Wales defeated Austria 2-1.

While Sweden needed extra-time to beat the Czech Republic 1-0.

Uruguay are the latest nation to secure their place at the 2022 World Cup.

They beat Peru 1-nil in their South American zone qualifier this morning.

Ecuador also confirmed their qualification, despite a 3-1 defeat to Paraguay.

They join Brazil and Argentina as the automatic qualifiers from the South American group.

Closer to home…Japan have booked their place at the World Cup…after a 2-0 win over Australia.

The result also confirmed Saudi Arabia’s qualification, leaving them ahead of the Aussies in their qualifying group.
