Gabby Thomas of the USA has won the women’s 200m event, taking the gold medal ahead of Julien Alfred of St Lucia and fellow American Brittany Brown.

This is Thomas’ first global title, having won the bronze at the last edition of the Games in Tokyo.

Her win also denied 100m gold medalist Alfred a sprint double.

The training session for the open water swimming event in the River Seine has been cancelled due to pollution.

This is the fifth time a swim familiarization session has been cancelled because of water quality.

Brazil have made the final of the women’s football event, after a 4-2 win over World Champions Spain in the semis.

And, Romania’s PM says he is boycotting the Paris Olympics closing ceremony, to protest one of his country’s athletes being denied a gymnastics medal following a score revision.

In other developments…Atletico Madrid have agreed an over 81 million pounds fee to sign Man City forward Julian Alvarez.

This would be a record sale for City, surpassing the 50 million they received from Chelsea for Raheem Sterling back in 2022.

PSG have reportedly held initial talks with Man United over a possible summer move for winger Jadon Sancho.
