Aaron and Wooi Yik deliver Malaysia's first medal in Tokyo

Malaysia has won its first medal at the Tokyo Olympics!

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik delivered a bronze in the men’s badminton doubles, after beating world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan in three sets last night.

It was only the Malaysian pair’s second victory in eight meetings against their more experienced opponents.

Aaron and Wooi Yik’s achievement means that badminton has delivered at least one medal at every Olympics since 1992…with the exception of the 2000 and 2004 editions.

Meanwhile the Prime Minister has congratulated Aaron and Wooi Yik on their accomplishment.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is hoping their bronze will inspire other Malaysian athletes to do well in Tokyo.

Elaine Thompson-Herah successfully defended her 100m title, taking the gold medal ahead of fellow Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson.

Thompson-Herah’s time of 10.61 seconds was a new Olympic record, and makes her the second-fastest woman in history.

The top six competitors also ran under 11 seconds, making this the quickest Olympic women’s final ever.

World tennis number one Novak Djokovic will leave Tokyo without a medal, after losing his bronze medal match to Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain.

The Serbian also pulled out of the mixed-doubles bronze match due to injury.
