Singapore defers Joseph Schooling's National Service enrolment

Aug 15, 2016

Singapore's Defence Minister says Olympic gold medallist swimmer, Joseph Schooling's National Service deferment will be extended to after the 2020 Tokyo Games.

According to Channel News Asia, the 21 year old's original deferment, which was granted in 2013, was set to expire at the end of this month.

Schooling won Singapore's first Olympic gold medal, after he triumphed in the 100m butterfly event.

Separately, the Singaporean Parliament moved a motion today to formally recognise Schooling's win in Rio.
