Refugees expected to compete again at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Jul 10, 2017

Refugees are expected to compete again at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This, after the International Olympic Committee unveiled its first team of refugees at at last year's Rio Games.

The IOC says it is already discussing a potential team for Tokyo, but it's too early to talk about size of that team.

It adds that there's a complex selection process, with the refugees camps scattered across the world.

Separately, Olympic chiefs will meet tomorrow to discuss and likely rubberstamp the process to award the 2024 and 2028 Games simultaneously.

They will hold an extraordinary session in Switzerland, after Los Angeles and Paris present their bids to host the Olympics.

Both cities are planning to use a record number of existing and temporary venues, a first in Olympic history, aimed at cutting costs.

However, the vote to decide the 2024 and presumably the 2028 hosts as well, will only be made in Peru in September.
