Mohd Faiz Subri makes football history

Jan 10, 2017

Mohd Faiz Subri has made football history when he became the first ever Malaysian and Asian, to clinch the prestigious FIFA Puskas Award.

The Penang footballer rose to fame courtesy of his "physics-defying" free-kick goal against Pahang in the Super League last year, which has been viewed more than 2.4 million times on FIFATV's YouTube channel.

It garnered nearly 60% of the votes compared to the 2 other goals on the short-list.

The Puskas Award, which recognizes the most beautiful goal of the year, was established in 2009 with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar among its previous winners.

This, as Cristiano Ronaldo was named the World's Best Player, while Leicester's Claudio Ranieri was named Best Men's Coach.

Ronaldo was also named in the FIFA - Fifpro Best 11, along with
Lionel Messi and Neymar, as the list was dominated by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The only player not to compete in Spain on the list, is Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Meanwhile, supporters of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund have won the first FIFA Fan Award for their act of solidarity in singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" together to remember those that lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.
