Malaysia wins first medal at Rio Olympics

Aug 10, 2016

Malaysia has won its first silver Olympics medal, not from badminton, when divers Cheong Jun Hoong and Pandelela Rinong finished 2nd in the women's 10 meter platform synchronised event.

The duo scored 344.34, slightly more than 10 points behind the winning pair from China.

Jun Hoong has 2 more events, the 3-meter springboard this Friday and the 10-meter individual platform next week, in which Pandalela is also competing in.

Meanwhile, national weightlifter Hafifi Mansor could only manage 13th place in the 69kg category.

This, as China added another gold through weightlifter Deng Wei, who won the women's 63kg category on her Olympic debut and broke the world record held by Taiwan's Lin Tzu-chi.

In Sailing, Khairul Nizam Affendy was 33rd in the 4th race of the Men's Laser Standard event, while Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif improved to 30th in the Ladies' Laser Radial event.

Serena Williams' Olympic outing is over, after the London gold medalist lost to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in the Round of 16, just days after she and sister Venus relinquished their doubles' crown.

Spain's French Open champion and world number 3, Garbine Muguruza was also knocked out in the 3rd round.

Another surprise came from rugby, as the All-Blacks New Zealand team, lost to Japan 14-12, in their opening match.
