Liverpool secure their place in the Champions League knockout round

Liverpool have secured their place in the Champions League knockout round after a 1-0 win over Ajax at Anfield this morning.

Curtis Jones took advantage of a goalkeeping mistake to net the winner –which was his first goal in the competition.

The win also ensures that the Reds will go through as group winners.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan kept their qualification hopes alive with a 3-2 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach.

This came as Shakhtar Donetsk pulled off a surprise 2-0 win over Real Madrid.

It means that all four teams have a chance of making it out of Group B into the last-16.

In other selected results this morning…Bayern Munich's 15-game winning streak in the Champions League is over after a weakened team needed a late penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.

While Man City secured top spot in their group, after a goalless draw with Porto.

Covid-19 disruption

Its confirmed that Saturday’s Premiership clash between Newcastle and Aston Villa has been postponed, following a Covid-19 outbreak at the Magpies’ training ground.

This is the first Premier League fixture this season to be postponed because of the coronavirus.

Russell to fill on for Hamilton?

George Russell has emerged as the favourite to replace Lewis Hamilton at this weekend’s Sakhir F1 GP, after the Mercedes driver tested positive for Covid-19.

Russel, who currently drives for Williams, is part of the Mercedes young driver program.

The German outfit also have their reserve driver Stofel Vandoorne as another option to cover for Hamilton.
