UEFA has rejected proposals for the football World Cup to be held every two years.

The European governing body says doing so would dilute the tournament and make it less special.

It comes as FIFA studies proposals to hold football’s showpiece event biennially…which already has the support of several federations.

Tottenham will issue a fine to their Argentine players Giovani Lo Celso and Christian Romero…who were caught up in the controversial suspension of the Brazil-Argentina World Cup qualifier.

The duo were accused of falsifying immigration forms to avoid a Covid-19 quarantine in Brazil, which prompted health officials to storm the pitch to stop the game minutes after kickoff.

Novak Djokovic is through to the quarterfinals of the US tennis Open.

The world number one survived an early scare, bouncing back from a first set loss to beat Jenson Brooksby in four sets.

Djokovic is now just three wins away from clinching all four Grand Slam titles this year.

It is finally confirmed that Valtteri Bottas will drive for the Alfa Romeo F1 team next season, after four years with Mercedes.

This now paves the way for George Russell to replace him as Lewis Hamilton’s partner at the reigning world champions.
