Jul 02, 2024

euro 2024: portugal struggle to make the quarters

Portugal are through to the Euro 2024 quarterfinals…after a 3-0 penalty shootout victory over Slovenia this morning.

The match had finished goalless at the end of regulation and extra-time.

Diogo Costa was the hero for the Portuguese…with the goalkeeper saving all three of Slovenia’s spot-kicks.

They will next go on to face France…who needed an own goal to beat Belgium 1-0 in their last-16 tie.

The French have scored just three goals so far this tournament…none of which have come from open play.

-

Elsewhere at the Euros…England’s Jude Bellingham is being investigated by UEFA for allegedly making an obscene gesture during their win over Slovakia.

The midfielder, however, claims it was an inside joke, directed towards his close friends.

-

Diver Bertrand Rhodict Lises and sailor Nur Shazrin Latif have been selected as Malaysia’s flag-bearers for the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

The OCM says the duo were selected to represent  the make-up of the Malaysian contingent, which comprises both debutants and those with Olympic experience.

Nur Shazrin is the country’s first sailor to be selected as flag-bearer…while Bertrand is only the fourth Sarawakian to be given the honour.

-

And, Malaysia has fallen to a 3-1 defeat to China in the semifinals of the mixed team event at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships.
