Eradicating Aedes breeding grounds best way to tackle Zika

Sep 02, 2016

The best way to tackle Zika is to eradicate the breeding grounds of its vector, the Aedes mosquito.

As such, the Health Ministry says the measure is now its top priority, especially since Malaysia confirmed its first case of Zika yesterday.

It has also called for all Malaysians to support its efforts, including by allowing vector control teams conducting fogging to enter their homes.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Health Department is taking all appropriate control and preventive measures against the virus, since the woman who contracted Zika lives in Klang.

It is also studying and monitoring the places visited by the woman, and urged residents in Bandar Botanic to be extra vigilant of their surroundings.

Over in Perak, the state government will enforce measures to detect people with Zika at the Ipoh Airport, since there are direct flights between the city and Singapore.

This, as Singapore's Health Ministry says half of the 115 Zika cases in the country are foreigners, with 6 of them Malaysians.

The largest group of Zika-infected foreigners who live and work in the republic are Chinese nationals, followed by Indians and Bangladeshis.
