1MDB Trial: Najib Found Guilty

After seven years, the verdict has been announced in Datuk Seri Najib Razak's RM2.3 billion 1MDB trial. 

The KL High Court has found the former prime minister GUILTY on all counts, after ruling that the former prime minister failed to raise reasonable doubt in his defence. 

Najib was convicted on 4 charges of abuse of power, as well as 21 counts of money laundering.  

With regards to the money laundering charges... 

• 9 involved the receiving proceeds of illegal activities  

• 5 were related to the use of such proceeds. 

• The remaining 7 involved the transfer of proceeds of illegal activities.  

While reading the verdict, the judge ruled on several matters raised in Najib's defence. 

He rejected the claim that the money was a political donation from the Saudi royal family – adding that purported documents produced by the defence were forgeries.  

The Judge also dismissed arguments that Najib was misled by the 1MDB board.  

At the time of writing, the judge has yet to announce his sentence.  

Meanwhile, Najib's lawyer has already confirmed that he will be lodging an appeal.    

Currently, Najib is serving the remainder of his jail sentence over the RM42 million SRC International case.
