Imported apples and oranges will be exempted from the expanded sales and service tax.

The Prime Minister says this is because many from the B40 group often eat these fruits as they are affordable.

However, he says other imported fruit will still be hit with the SST.

The Finance Ministry earlier said this is aimed at bolstering local agricultural demand and strengthening food security.

The government has good news for SPM top achievers.

The Cabinet has decided that all those who apply for matriculation with at least 10A’s in their 2024 exam…including those with A- scores…will now be given a place in the program…regardless of race or background.

This is to ensure that all outstanding students have a chance to further their education.

The Education Ministry has also clarified that the existing Bumiputera quota for the matriculation program will not be affected by the latest update.

Local banking associations have assured that charges for basic services like savings and current accounts will be exempt from the upcoming service tax on financial services.

They say the tax…which will begin in phases next month…has been set at 8 percent and will apply to fee and commission based services.

Customers are advised to refer to the latest communications from their respective banks for more details.

The suspect in the murder of a female university student in Cyberjaya, had used the victim’s ATM card to withdraw money.

Cops are now gathering CCTV footage from the bank branches to identify the suspect, and narrow down his location.

Police earlier said the 20-year-old student was found dead in her condominium unit with head injuries…with no signs of forced entry into the home…and no indication of sexual assault.
