AWAS: Speed Trap Cameras Getting Upgraded

Jan 07, 2025

awas: speed trap cameras getting upgraded

The government will upgrade its AWAS speed trap cameras, to ensure that motorists follow the speed limit.

According to the Transport Ministry, it's to address weaknesses in the current system, in which drivers will slow down in front of the cameras and then speed up again afterwards.

The upgrade will involve a point-to-point system, which will calculate how fast a vehicle travels from one point to another.

This will determine if they drove at a safe speed.

The system will be installed in high-risk areas including portions of the KL-Karak Expressway, and the North-South Expressway near the Menora Tunnel.

Singapore is ready to listen to any new offers to revive the scrapped High Speed Rail project with Malaysia.

Its Prime Minister Lawrence Wong says such a project would benefit both countries.

On Malaysia's side, PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said it will only be revived with full participation from the private sector, without much government involvement.

He says because of current limitations; the government wants to focus on other essential programmes over the next couple of years.

This includes poverty alleviation, flood mitigation; and education and public health.
