Northeast Monsoon To Hit Early

The Northeast Monsoon may start a little earlier than expected.

It was initially forecast to begin in early November…but the Deputy Prime Minister says it could now hit by the end of this month.

However, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi assured that preparations for the Northeast Monsoon are in full swing, and that authorities have already identified at-risk areas that are prone to flooding.

He also says the Met Department will be issuing early warnings five days before extreme rainfall or high tides are expected.

The flood situation in Kedah continues to worsen, with the Social Welfare Department's portal now reporting over 2,300 evacuees there. 

The number of victims in Johor is also up to nearly 600, while almost 470 remain displaced in Perlis.  

Meanwhile, there are around 300 displaced in Selangor and Perak combined, while just over 20 victims are in Melaka.

The World Bank says underemployment among Malaysian graduates, particularly degree holders, has risen from 8.6% in 2010 to nearly 27% in 2022.

It explained that one of the underlying reasons for the problem is due to the lack of high-skilled jobs being created for graduates.

Just last year, there were slightly over 48 thousand high-skilled jobs available on the market compared to 287 thousand graduates.

Elsewhere, authorities in the US have arrested a man in Oklahoma who was allegedly planning a terrorist attack on Election Day in the name of I.S.  

The FBI says the suspect was attempting to stockpile firearms and had planned to target large gatherings of people.

Separately, more than a dozen states in the US have sued TikTok, accusing the social media giant of contributing to a mental health crisis among teenagers. 

They claim that that company uses addictive features to hook children to the app and that it has intentionally misled the public about the safety of prolonged use.
