82 thousand summonses issued under AWAS since its launch
Jun 22, 2017
More than 82 thousand summonses have been issued under the Automated Awareness Safety System or AWAS since its launch in April.
The JPJ says over 72 thousand summonses were for speeding, while the rest were for beating red lights.
The department adds that there are now 21 AES cameras under the system nationwide, including seven that were put up in time for the Balik Kampung period.
Meanwhile, the speed limit on all federal roads has been reduced to 80 kilometers per hour until July 2nd, in conjunction with the Balik Kampung period.
The Works Ministry adds that state roads meanwhile, now have a lower speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour.
It adds that all non-essential construction and maintenance work on highways, federal and state roads will also be suspended for the time being, to ensure a smoother flow of traffic.
