smart home devices powered hacking attack

Oct 23, 2016

Hackers reportedly used malware-infected smart home devices, such as CCTV cameras and printers, in the massive cyber-attack that disabled major websites including Twitter, Spotify, and Reddit recently.

According to one security firm, many of the infected devices came from Chinese manufacturers.

They have easy-to-guess usernames and passwords that cannot be changed by the user, and this is something that cyber-criminals could easily exploit.

The owner of the device would generally have no way of knowing that it had been compromised.

While the use of such devices in cyber-attacks is still relatively new, experts believe they may become more common in the future.
