Segamat Quake: Msia Is Not Within Ring Of Fire

Aug 25, 2025

segamat quake: msia is not within ring of fire

Officials have dismissed fears that Malaysia is now within the Pacific Ring of Fire, which would put the country at risk of major earthquakes.

MetMalaysia deputy chief Ambun Dindang says instead, we remain outside of the area.

He also clarified that while Malaysia does have seismic fault lines, they are not as active as those within the Ring of Fire.

This means that Malaysia is only prone to experiencing weak earthquakes.

Meanwhile, the Minerals and Geocience Department says several earthquakes have been recorded in Peninsular Malaysia over the past 40 years.

They happened detected in areas such as Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan; Kenyir, Terengganu; and Bukit Tinggi, Pahang.

This, following yesterday's 4.1-magnitude quake near Segamat, Johor.

This, as two community colleges in Segamat have decided to conduct home-based teaching and learning for students and staff due to yesterday's quake.

The policy will be in effect until Wednesday.

Also, the government has been urged to widen the scope of its natural disaster risk reduction efforts

A cross-party parliamentary committee says in addition to flood mitigation, such efforts should also cover geological disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and landslides.

The committee says this includes increasing the funding for research on earthquake risks and new seismic dangers.
