FMM: Consider Region-Based Minimum Wage
Jan 31, 2025

The government should consider adopting different minimum wage rates, depending on individual regions or states.
The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers says it's because each state has different cost of living and economic conditions.
It recokons that having a national-level minimum wage could put a strain on small businesses in less-developed areas.
This, as the new national minimum wage of RM1,700 takes effect tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the HR Ministry says 4.3 million workers are expected to benefit from the new minimum wage.
It warned that employers who fail to comply will face penalties, including a maximum fine of up to RM20,000 and up to five years jail.
The ministry also pointed out that minimum wage should not be used as a benchmark for starting salaries, especially for graduates.

RM24 million ringgit will be channeled immediately for flood relief efforts in Sabah and Sarawak.
PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says to help the states repair infrastructure that's damaged by rising waters.
He also announced a RM1,000 payment for each household affected by disasters including floods, landslides and fires.
According to the Social Welfare Department's portal, over 7 thousand people are currently being housed at temporary flood shelters in both states.
