Parliament Passes Online Safety Bill

Dec 11, 2024

parliament passes online safety bill

The Dewan Rakyat has passed the Online Safety Bill.

Once gazetted, the bill will require social media platforms to ensure platform safety, protect children under 13, and restrict access to harmful content.

This, despite several groups raising concerns that the bill's vague definition of harmful content would undermine the freedom of expression and lead to excessive censorship.

The Law and Institutional Reform Minister has since responded to these concerns, saying that such freedoms are a constitutional right.

However, such freedoms are not unlimited and are subject to restrictions to ensure security.

The Health Ministry says it has opened an investigation into allegations that a private hospital in Klang withheld a deceased newborn baby’s remains for two weeks, because of his parents’ unpaid bills.

It also urged people to remain calm, and let the investigators do their job.

Meanwhile the hospital released a statement denying any wrongdoing, saying it followed existing SOPs.

Currently, around 4,000 people are housed at temporary flood shelters across 4 states.

Terengganu reported 3,9000 evacuees, while the others are in Johor, Pahang and Perak.

Meanwhile according to MetMalaysia’s latest advisory, an alert-level continuous rain warning is in effect for Perlis, and parts of Kedah< Kelantan, Terengganu and Perak until tomorrow.
