Flood Update: 150k evacuees currently
Dec 01, 2024
Authorities have been told to step up their monitoring of areas that are at high risk of landslides during the monsoon season.
DPM Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi said this, following a recent landslide in Hulu Terengganu that claimed two lives. He also advised people to prioritise their safety during the monsoon period.
Meanwhile, the govt has already started paying out RM1000 in compassionate aid to families affected by the floods.
This, as the number of evacuees crossed 150,000.
As at 9am, 97,000 evacuees were seeking shelter at 280 temporary shelters in Kelantan.
Terrengganu had 41,000 flood victims, while nearly 8,000 were displaced in Kedah.
Also, Negeri Sembilan reported close to 2,000 evacuees and the remainder were in Perlis, Pahang, Johor, Melaka and Selangor.

Kelantan police urged people to only contact the authorities for legitimate flood emergencies.
This, as cops in Pasir Mas received over a hundred prank calls about people stranded in floodwaters.
The state police chief says these calls divert valuable resources away from genuine rescue efforts.
--
Meanwhile, the Armed Forces is mobilising assets to relocate around 190 flood-affected SPM candidates in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan.
Reports say these students will take the exams at two flood relief centres there.
Elsewhere, Terengganu has granted disaster leave to students, teachers and staff at around 110 schools there today, after the premises were converted to temporary flood shelters.
--
Also, the Human Resources Ministry has urged employers to show compassion and empathy to any workers affected by floods.
It says among other things, they cannot impose arbitrary wage reductions, as it’s against the law.
