Expert Backs Home Detention Proposal

Mar 08, 2024

expert backs home detention proposal

An expert has welcomed the government's proposal to implement home detention for certain prison inmates.

Criminologist Kamal Affandi Hashim says it's a good addition to the proposed reforms for our correctional system.

Home Detention is aimed at prisoners who are serving jail terms of 4 years or less, with a focus on inmates with chronic illnesses, the elderly or disabled, or pregnant women.

He pointed out that this is nothing new, and is merely an extension to existing systems such as releasing prisoners early on grounds of good behaviour..

Earlier, the home ministry said that Home Detentions are meant to help deal with overcrowded prisons.
