A study published yesterday (22nd July) showed that two doses of Pfizer or AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine are nearly as effective against the highly transmissible Delta coronavirus variant.
Published in the New England Journal of Medicine by Public Health England in May, the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca confirms the headline findings.
Two doses of Pfizer’s shots were 88 percent effective at preventing the Delta variant and 93.7 percent against the Alpha variant.
On the other hand, two shots of AstraZeneca vaccine were 67 percent effective against the Delta variant and 74.5 percent effective against the Alpha variant.
Researchers of Public Health England wrote in a study stating that there are modest differences in both the vaccines effectiveness. However, data from Israel showed lower effectiveness of Pfizer’s shot against symptomatic disease.
The effectiveness of single doses of Pfizer and AstraZeneca were studied too. One dose of Pfizer's shot was 36 percent effective, and one dose of AstraZeneca's vaccine was around 30 per cent effective.
The author of the study noted that finding reduced effectiveness after the first dose would encourage maximising vaccine uptake with two doses among vulnerable groups in the context of circulation of the Delta variant.
